The Flaming Gorge Recreation Area is a huge national site located in the Ashley National Forest in the Uintah Mountains. It is about 35 miles north of my home in Vernal. The area has a great many very nice campgrounds, a very big lake and a very unique area called the Red Canyon Overlook where the government has a nice building overlooking the canyon and a private enterprise has a nice lodge with restaurant, small lake, horseback riding and what have you. White water rafting is a big attraction below the dam.
The Uintah Mountains are a part of the Rocky Mountain Chain and are unique in that the range runs east and west rather than the more common north and south. The highest point in Utah is in these mountains. It is King's Peak and I believe it is around 13,000 ft. in height.
